Total male strength of college = Sum of male students in each department
= 120 + 100 + 90 + 90 + 100 + 80
= 580

2.
Total number of male students in the college = 580
Total number of female students in the college = 90 + 90 + 108 + 135 + 180 + 48
= 651
∴ Sex ratio = 651/580 ≈ 1.1

There are six departments,
∴ 6x males leave the college and 6x females join the college.
Number of male students = 580 – 6x
Number of female students = 651 + 6x
Sex ratio = (651 + 6x) / (580 – 6x)
⇒ 2.0775 = (651 + 6x) / (580 – 6x)
⇒ 1204.95 – 12.465x = 651 + 6x
⇒ 553.95 = 18.465x
Solving x = 30
∴ Number of males in economics department = 80 – 30 = 50
Number of females in economics department = 48 + 30 = 78
∴ Sex ratio = 78/50 = 1.56

For English department, sex ratio = 90/100 = 0.9
