Report ‘Boom & Bust 2020’: 4 New Coal projects added in India while coal capacity declined to 66GW

In accordance with a report titled “Boom and Bust 2020:Tracking the Global Plant Pipeline” 47.4 GW coal fired power projects at different stages were cancelled in India in 2019 which reduced total under development coal capacity to 66 GW. The report was prepared jointly by Global Energy Monitor, Greenpeace International, the Sierra Club, and Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA).

US announced $174 mn aid to 64 countries including $2.9 mn to India to tackle COVID-19


The United States of America (USA) will provide additional USD 174 million financial assistance to 64  most at-risk countries which includes USD 2.9 million to India as a support for combating the coronavirus pandemic. In February 2020, the USA provided 100 million aid for the same purpose.

  • Remdesivir– This experimental antiviral compound was widely used to combat Ebola and other dangerous viruses in the past.
  • Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine: This is used to treat patients suffering from malaria. Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) has also recommended this for healthcare workers and caregivers looking after positive COVID-19 patients.
  • Combination of lopinavir and ritonavir: This drug combination is used for treating human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This combination slows down the process of deterioration of organs.In India, it was used to treat the first case of coronavirus who were a couple from Italy.
  • Ritonavir/lopinavir plus interferon-beta: This combination is used to treat Middle-East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS) patients in Saudi Arabia.Interferon-beta is immune system messengers that can help cripple viruses.

Pune based ARI scientists develops biofortified high-protein wheat variety ‘MACS 4028’

A team of Scientists from Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) in Pune, Maharashtra, have developed ‘MACS 4028’, a biofortified wheat variety, which shows high-protein content of around 14.7% good nutritional quality having zinc 40.3 ppm, and iron content of 40.3ppm and 46.1ppm (parts per million) respectively.

Merger of 10 state-run banks into 4 to come into force from April 1: RBI

RBI announces liquidity boost of Rs 3.74 lakh crore amid coronavirus outbreak



Reserve Bank of India (RBI) declared an infusion of Rs 3.74 lakh crore into the banking system through three measures viz. targeted long-term repo operation (TLTRO), Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) and marginal standing facility (MSF). The decision has been taken to tackle financial system stress raised due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

SBI commits 0.25% of annual profit for FY 2019-20: COVID-19

On lending by banks to NBFCs is classified as priority sector in FY21




As per the revised norms, on-lending by NBFCs for ‘term lending’ component under agriculture will be allowed up to Rs 10 lakh per borrower.
-In case of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) the limit will be Rs 20 lakh per borrower.
-In the housing sector, the limit has been enhanced from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh per borrower for classification of the loan as priority sector lending.

NTPC ( formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation Limited), India’s largest energy conglomerate, has inked a share purchase agreement (SPAs) worth of Rs 11,500 crore with the central government.

PM Narendra Modi formulated PM-CARES fund to fight coronavirus outbreak


Prime Minister Narendra Modi has created of assistance and emergency situation relief fund namely Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM-CARES) where people can contribute and help in the government’s fight against coronavirus. This newly created public charitable trust has PM Narendra Modi as the chairmanand defence minister (Rajnath Singh), home minister (Amit Shah) and the finance minister (Nirmala Sitaraman) as its members.

State Bank of India (SBI) is the banking partner of PM-CARES.

Key Contributions towards PM-CARES
People from all spheres and occupations are making contributions. Here are the key ones:
-President Ram NathKovind donated a month’s salary to the fund.
-Indian Railways is donating Rs 151 crore to help in combating the coronavirus threat.
-The Army, Navy and the Indian Air Force as well as employees of the Defence Ministry have decided to donate one day’s salary totalling around Rs 500 crore.
-The Supreme Court staff will give up to three days’ worth of salary to the PM CARES fund.
-Tata Sons and Tata Trusts have pledged to give Rs 1,500 crore. Adani Group owner Gautam Adani had also pledged to give Rs 100 crore towards the fund. Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar donated Rs 25 crore towards the fund, among others.

Chander Suta Dogra launched a book- “Missing in Action: The Prisoners Who Never Came Back”

The book  addresses the missing Indian soldiers during the mission of 1965 & 1971 Indo- Pak wars & also attempts to find out what happened to them, hoping to open up a debate on how soldiers are often used as pawns by governments.
